The delicious Porsche plug-in-hybrid 918 Spyder - which first appeared as a concept at the Geneva Motor Show, hitting everyone's sweet spot for ground-breaking innovation and sexy, good looks - is headed to the production line in fall 2013!
Why are we telling you this now... that's like two years away? There are a handful of good reasons:
A. Because it's really exciting. B. Because, even while production isn't slated to start for nearly two years, Porsche has already started taking orders for the Hybrid 918 SpyderC. Porsche plans to make no more than 918 units of the all-new two-seat supercar, and they're likely to go fast, even at US$845,000
D. Available on a first-come-first-serve basis, Hybrid 918 Spyders will be delivered in the order in which they were ordered
According to Porsche, the only change we'll see in the production plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder that wasn't evidenced in the concept is a new manual roof system that can be removed and stowed in the front luggage compartment. The concept that debuted in Geneva had an open top configuration.
The 918 Spyder's hybrid system, however, will still be comprised of a mid-mounted 4.0-liter 500-hp V8 engine (based on the Porsche RS Spyder racing engine) and two electric motors (one on each axle). Together, the two electric motors add another 218 hp to the package and put preliminary 0-62 mph acceleration specs at just 3.1 seconds.
Three-point-one seconds! A hybrid that accelerates as fast as it takes to say its sprint time out loud?! It seems unbelievable. But it's true. And, that's why we think this fuel-conservative beast will sell like crazy. It's innovation at its best.
Plug-In Hybrid Porsche 918 Spyder Vital Stats
- Fuel economy: Over 78 mpg!- Electric-Only Driving Range: 16 miles per full charge
- Charge time: 3-6 hours (though a quick charging option is planned to reduce charge time even further)
- Liquid cooled lithium-ion battery can be charged from a conventional domestic power socket
In recognizing that buyers may get antsy between now and 2013, Porsche has developed a special edition 911 Turbo dubbed the 911 Turbo S "Edition 911 Spyder". Similar to the Hybrid 918 Spyder, only 918 units will be produced. Available only for plug-in hybrid Spyder buyers, deliveries of this special edition are expected to roll in around June 2011.
